When public speaking, don't picture them naked.

When public speaking, don't picture them naked.

This letter comes straight to you from my blog. You can read it online here.

I remember when I was nervous ad nauseam about public speaking.

Nowadays this might be difficult to believe because you have seen me on TV, on stages etc. But yes, I was nervous and I still have those days.

I went to a certification program where somebody said something about picturing the people naked. Supposedly it helps you feel less nervous.

That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard.

It would only make me feel more awkward. Also, some of those people I really don't want to picture naked ??.?

Do this instead:

  • Picture yourself having a one-on-one conversation with each person.
  • Imagine speaking with someone sitting across your desk or casually standing at a bar.

You would probably feel more relaxed in that scenario, right?

  • Seek eye contact with each person in front of you. And pretend to have a one-on-one conversation casually with them.
  • In your mind, address each person individually. Break down the mass audience monster.

When you act as if you're talking to one, each person in the audience feels a sense of personal connection.

Now, instead of this huge wall of people in front of you, you're just having several one-to-one conversations.

It's the thought of all these people judging you all at once that makes you nervous. So address them one by one with your eyes and break the barrier down.

Also, start speaking more casually, to sound more relatable. Take breaks, crack jokes, take breaths. The audience won't mind, I promise.

I hope this has helped you, but if you or anyone in your company needs help with public speaking or camera confidence, please feel free to reach out.
