"When a product specialist (insurance, annuities, indexing) is talking and things aren't clear, I'm scared to ask a question and sound stupid."

Question from a subscriber: "Sometimes when a product specialist (insurance, annuities, indexing) is talking and things aren't clear, I'm scared to ask a question and sound stupid."

It's how you ask the question.

Use just a touch of self-deprecating terminology to appear humble, and then follow it up with some technical wording.

See bolded terms below for how this works.

?

Take these actions TODAY:

  • "Forgive me for sounding naive, but how does the cash value accumulate when interest rates are zero?"
  • Sounding naive = self deprecation
  • Interest rates are zero = technical
  • "Sorry for the basic question, but why does that number represent the put option's price or the actual profit?"
  • Basic question = self deprecation
  • Interest rates are zero = put option's price etc.

Humble yourself, and then say something that shows them where your technical understanding falls off.

This combination avoids people being frustrated with you because it shows the speaker that you are listening, and then immediately reveals to them where the break in logic occurs.

Yeah?

Yaaaaah.

BOOM - there you go, today's marketing tip for ya!

Part of this reflects that the speaker does not know their audience. You state to them, 'if you do not understand some material, please raise your hand since if you do not grasp these 'basics' you will not how they should be applied. Better yet, the speaker must know who is attending from the sponsor. Then the speaker focuses to that level. If too many basic questions, the sponsor screwed up. Speaker then has to wing it- not his/her fault but will be downgraded unnecessarily.
