When the Past is Present it Determines Our?Future

It's easy to tell yourself "that was then, this is now"...but is it?

We like to tell ourselves that the emotional upheavals of our life are "all in the past", yet the question remains: Are they really?

When you actually stop and think about it; you can likely see that much of our daily experiences are nothing more than those same past experiences playing out in a new scenario.

This is why: "Real Leadership is an Ongoing Process of Personal Courage!

Just because “it” is in your past on a time-line, doesn't mean it's done!
What most people don't know is that the unconscious mind has no chonology!
It does not discern the past from the present or the future! 

Here's a simple (and revealing) exercise:

Think about the last time someone cut you off in traffic, or did some other equally frustrating behavior.

If when you remember that incident you also remember that you got beyond a bit frustrated... maybe you touched into the range of outrage. What you might want to know is that’s called a ‘disproportionate response.’ (if you haven't done it I guarantee you've interacted with someone who has...right?)

Simply put, it means that from an outsider or neutral perspective the incident measured on an anger response scale might have been worthy of a ‘3’ response rate. However, your reaction may have been more like a 6+. Hence, the response is determined as disproportionate.

If you can't remember a traffic incident, that's okay. Think of any time where you've become incredibly angry, (and it may even have surprised you).

Here's a big clue: Even if, you became incredibly angry but no one else knew, because you have become masterful at stuffing/disguising it from others and yourself. Anytime that happens, it’s a reliable indicator that there's other ‘stuff’ that you're upset about. Being outraged at the driver who cut you off (or any such situation) is simply a safe place to express what you haven’t felt safe expressing in another situation.

Bottom line: If you are having disproportionate responses, it means your past is not in the past. In fact, until you (I/we) deal with "it", it ends up running our lives! It will be what determines the future! This is why each of us as leaders of others and ourselves must commit to developing our self-awareness, self-knowledge and overall emotional intelligence.

What we refuse to acknowledge about ourselves becomes the driving force of not only our leadership, but also a destiny we may not desire.

“What you refuse to look at controls you.”

Major Tip: As a leader who is committed to being both an Emotionally Intelligent and Conscious Leader: Watch for disproportionate responses (even if they are internal) and ask yourself: "What might I be angry about that actually has nothing to do with this situation?"

There is magnificence within you... Who you are is so much greater than your history. However, until we genuinely examine at our history and deal with what we may have repressed we are destined to repeat it in one form or another.
