When Pablo Picasso painted the heroic action of Manolis Glezos in Acropolis!!

In July 1959, Picasso participated in the movement for the liberation of Manolis Glezos.

Pablo Picasso, the amazing painter of all times, dedicated a piece of his artwork to Manolis Glezos' heroic action of putting down from Acropolis' rock the Nazi flag.

He painted a sketch that shows Manolis Glezos in the top of Parthenon holding a flag with the dove of peace. One may see the artist's signature at the bottom of the rock...

Manolis Glezos met Pablo Picasso after his liberation. "I was left free from the prison in December 1962", says Manolis Glezos "and I was invited to France by the committee that played a very important role for my liberation. It was there that I met Pablo Picasso in his summer house in Aix-en-Provence. During that period he had created a series of artwork made of metal. I walked through his magnificent exhibition in his summer house, and climbed the steps to the first floor. He was in his bedroom. He was ill but wanted to meet me. I entered an enormous room. He was sitting on his bed and had on his right hand side a pile of letters which he was reading and placing them on the left hand side afterwards. There was no artwork in this bedroom. In front of him, there was a window that let the light in generously. I approached him and gave my hand for a handshake... He hold my hand and said.." "Greece! Light!" "I will never forget this phrase... He told me when and how he came to Greece, his impressions from the Parthenon but he said nothing about the sketch that he had created for me. I thanked him for his help and his participation in the movement that led to my liberation from the prison. We discussed about our politics... I will always remember this man full of life and passion just like his amazing artwork. He gave me a couple of his creations and when I left the room, I saw the renowned Guernica..."
