When a line in a book speaks to you

“The Lower East Side begins just south of where the numbered streets and avenues end. It’s where Manhattan stops making sense.” – Brendan Jay Sullivan in Rivington Was Ours
This is the kind of sentence in a book that I love to read…and re-read. So simple yet filled with so much meaning. When I read lines like this, I’m moved to put the book down for a second and reflect on the sentence against my own life. It’s a line I’ll re-share with Annie, or on social media, or in a new blog post.
I want to be able to write like this, but another part of me thinks that it’s not my style or that maybe I’m just not that good at writing. I wonder if Brenden thought about this line over and over, or if it just came out of him naturally. I hope he had to work hard to craft a line like this, because that gives me hope I can do the same. Either way it’s a treat to read and reflect on.
