When the Lighthouse Becomes a Lightship…

Last week, when the U.S. Capitol was stormed, it reminded me of the storming of the Bastille that marked the start of the French Revolution of 1789, which toppled the monarchy in France. Was the storming of the Capitol the ominous start of the fall of democracy?
Hmmm! For me, it was hard to watch!
For a long, U.S. democracy was like a gigantic lighthouse atop a hill. It directed all lost ships and mariners from a vantage position. Many countries in the world looked up to the US as mariners look up to a lighthouse.
It appears the lighthouse became a lightship last week. Momentarily. Momentarily?
Unlike a lighthouse, a lightship operates from within the ocean or waterway. Like other ships and mariners, it is susceptible to waves and storms. Last week, a tsunami submerged the lighthouse. It was an eclipse at noon!
U.S.‘s reputation as the symbol of democracy was muddied and sullied. The world momentarily lost a beacon of hope. As a country bumpkin from Africa, the home of muddy waters, this got my heart pounding twice a second.
Boom-boom. Boom-boom. Boom-boom. It is still pounding in shock. This is not about my heart and my breathlessness. That is not important. Here is what you need to think about. This morning, I saw a photo of Lady Liberty in tears.
Not tears running down her cheek. No. It is blood on her face and her chest. Someone should call 911. It may just be a case of a mild cardiac arrest... but I don't know. Am just a pumpkin planter, not a political science junkie.
