WHEN A LIFE PATTERN BECOME A LIFE TRAP

You know that feeling, when your life seems to be a collection of stories with similar themes and almost identical endings.?Each story seems to share a common thread of circumstances leading to the same outcome despite your hopes it might end differently.?Similar to déjà vu in that it feels like you’ve been down this road before.?It’s not the same road that you took last time.?Yet where you end up feels the same.?

Those are signs that you might be caught in a Life Pattern. A Life Pattern could be described as a trap that we fall into because of an internal story that we believe about ourselves and that we not only stick to, we reinforce it when the opportunity presents itself..

Let’s look at just one of many.types of patterns as an example.

Short-term relationships – sometimes a deep-seated belief that we are undeserving of love leads us to think that true love will always elude us. We then pre-empt the downfall of our romantic relationships by either sabotaging them ourselves by breaking up early or inducing our partners to break up with us thus reinforcing the perception we have that we cannot be loved for any length of time and that no relationship we are in will ever last. We never give it a chance to succeed – we somehow just know that it is going to end.

Now the essential question here is what can we do to change our Life Patterns or Traps?

It all begins with recognition and acknowledgement. We need to recognize the pattern and acknowledge it for what it is. We also need to do some introspection work to uncover the root cause of this belief.?When did it start??How did we reinforce it over time? Once this is uncovered, we can take concrete steps to untangle the web of untruths we once believed and see them for the false beliefs they are.?Then we can begin to replace those beliefs with factual more positive ones and reinforce the new belief.

The self awareness and insight required is not something that comes naturally to any of us.?Usually it needs to brought to our attention by a trusted friend, therapist or coach.?Once we see ourselves and our action in the mirror they hold for us we can begin our journey to transforming those patterns.?These trusted ones that walk the journey with us can also serve as an accountability measure to ensure we reinforce the new belief pattern rather than relapse back into our old patterns and beliefs.?
