When Less is More - The Scourge of Productivity
A friend asked me yesterday, “Did you have a productive day today?â€.
This got me thinking about how we focus our time and energy. How we measure the success of our actions.
Of course, there are times when I want to be productive, which, according to the Cambridge Dictionary, means “resulting in or providing a large amount or supply of somethingâ€. Like when I am doing the book-keeping - I want to get a lot of it done and done quickly.
But at other times, it is far more important for us to be effective, that is, “Successful in producing a desired or intended result†(according to the Oxford English Dictionary). Like when we are developing a new product or coaching a client.
Focusing on efficiency can take us away from developing a relationship, creating a masterpiece, innovating or delivering the outcome our client needs.
Sometimes we need to slow down. Allow space. Take time out to reflect, to just be and allow a situation to unfold or let the solution come to us.
Faster isn’t always better.
More isn’t always better.
Even though I am a Chartered Accountant, I have come to realise it is about more than just the numbers (yes, I can hear the gasps of shock and horror).
We need to be intentional when approaching our tasks. Asking ourselves, “What is my purpose here?â€. What outcome am I looking to achieve?
How do want to make your mark today? Do you want to be known for your efficiency or your effectiveness? For how quickly you delivered the solution, or for the change you have helped bring about in the lives of your clients?
