When Leaders Become Followers: Losing the Courage to Transform
Theodoros Loukaidis
Director General at Cyprus Research and Innovation Foundation
In times of global upheaval, the world looks to leaders for unwavering commitment to purpose.
Leadership is not about blending in - it’s about breaking through!
Yet, some leaders falter because they become followers, caught in the tide of hesitation and favouring short-term appeasement over long-term vision.
They shift from leadership to followership which undermines their ability to address pressing issues. Their focus is on playing it safe, or aligning with popular opinion, rather than staying true to the innovative path. It’s a tragic cycle, as the very qualities that propelled them to leadership -resilience, originality, and boldness- fade away under pressure.
Transformational leaders stand firm in their vision, even when external forces challenge their resolve. They reject the pull of complacency, instead prioritising driving progress. Their aim is to rebuild, no matter how daunting the task!
In a world full of uncertainty, the call for transformational leaders has never been louder. In the face of global challenges we need leaders who rise and lead authentically.
Step out of the shadows and lead!
