When was the last time you went on REAL vacation?

When was the last time you went on vacation?
I am talking about a real vacation here ... not one where you wake up early to answer emails and work before the rest of the family gets up.
A real vacation is a break from work, business, and stress.
Back in my earlier consulting days, vacations were stressful.
I was away from the office and not billing hours, which meant revenue would take a hit that month.
I was stressed that an issue might arise that I could not jump right onto.
I was stressed thinking about the projects only I could do and was not working on.
That is not a vacation ... and worse yet, your family knows it!
Imagine a Different Type of Vacation
I want you to imagine a different type of vacation.
Picture yourself on a beach ... without a laptop or a phone.
It is not that they are not within reach ... you did not even bring them with you.
Your waiter approaches with a nice cold drink and a single piece of paper.
On that piece of paper are a series of numbers.
Those numbers describe various aspects of your business for the past week and then show you the numbers for the previous weeks.
From the information on that piece of paper, you know exactly whether your business is on track or off.
You can see the trends to see if this was a momentary blip or if something is building.
Maybe it is building towards your end-of-year goals ...
Or it is building towards a more significant issue.
Either way, you have a clear understanding.
Performance and Numbers are Key
You see, a successful and sustainable business is driven by numbers and performance.
If you have a great group of people and a great purpose but fail to deliver, the business will not last.
I see too many small business owners that, at best, check their financial numbers once a quarter.
You do not have a pulse on your business if that is how you manage performance.
Performance drives your team forward, from the bottom of the organization through the top.
Everybody in your team should know the numbers and understand how their individual performance and team performance impacts those numbers.
Decisions should be based upon numbers, and facts, not hopes, wishes, and dreams.
