When It's Not Employment Ageism, But It's Your Resume

When It's Not Employment Ageism, But It's Your Resume

It's easy for age 40+ job seekers to blame ageism when failing to get interviews. After all, it couldn't be your fault ... You're awesome!

But even though you are awesome, most age 40+ job seekers don't see that your resume often causes you to lose opportunities when you're qualified. Here are some reasons why:

  1. Being Qualified Isn't Enough:?For most jobs today, employers expect 5-10 qualified candidates competing for each interview spot (so if they're offering 10 interviews, they expect 50-100 qualified candidates, plus all of the unqualified ones). Employers find many qualified candidates, but few awesome candidates. If you're like most job seekers, you've been taught to write your resume to describe yourself as just qualified, but fail to show how awesome you really are - so your resume undersells you.
  2. Failing To Get Through Or Around ATSs:?The way that most candidates are taught to apply for jobs fails to get them either through or around Applicant Tracking Systems. Outplacement and most career coaches/authors teach job search strategies that conflict with the real hiring process most employers use.
  3. Not Enough Customization:?Outplacement and most career coaches/authors teach light customization - 15 minutes per resume on average. It's not enough to get past ATSs or visual pre-screening very often.
  4. Average Job Search Research Info:?Publicly available information (job descriptions, company websites, financial statements, Linkedin, and Google) are available to everyone - you get zero advantage over your competitors when you use public info as research. Worse, most of it is obsolete (including the job description and Google), causing you to describe yourself as the solution to last year's problems instead of current problems ... So you brand yourself as the wrong fit.

But there's good news - there are ways to fix each of these problems, so you'll get more interviews, better quality interviews, and can land a job faster when you're over 40. Want me to show you?

When employers say they cannot find qualified candidates, yet so many people are left in the cold due to ATS and other hiring practices, when does the onus stop being on candidates to jump through ever increasing numbers of hoops to prove their worth? We've entered a phase where playing the game is more important than being qualified for the work. #qualified #workethic #greatemployee #substanceoverflash
