When Inspiration Strikes, Drop What You're Doing And Act

It's 23:30 and I'm sat up in bed just outside of Ubud, Bali. Under normal circumstances this would be absolutely fine, but I have to be up in 2.5 hours.

Why? Because we're climbing a volcano and have to be at the summit before the sun comes up around 6am.

I'm not sleeping, and I really doubt I will... Because I'm buzzing... My brain is firing on all cylinders.

I've just sketched out the outline for our Q4 Public Workshop - which, btw, is going to be cracking, but more on that later...

Shouldn't I be sleeping? Am I going to regret writing this out when half way through our 5 hour trek? Have I completely lost it?

No, no and I don't think so, not yet.

Here's the important message... Which inspiration strikes, don't think twice - act.

Here's why.

#1 - Inspiration Is Flow and Flow Is Productive Happiness

Running an agency is hard.

I've never met an agency owner that loved 100% of the activities they had to do every day. In many cases, we probably don't love 50% of the activities we have to do every day.

When we are inspired, we're fired up... We're passionate about the work, the project, the strategy or the idea. Something has triggered our emotional engagement into the work, and this is what life is about.

When we first start out on our entrepreneur journey, we envisage that we'll be in inspired-flow 24/7, we see all the up side and miss all of the harder work, the downside. When we're inspired, we're living that vision from before, and it's time to act.

Besides...

#2 - If You Don't Act When You're Inspired, When Will You?

How many projects do you currently have 'On Hold' in your agency right now?

Maybe they're projects that you started but then ran out of steam? Client projects became more pressing, or a couple of new pitches came in.

Or maybe they're projects you never even started... They never made it past the notes app on your iPhone.

Here's the key to make sure that never happens again.

When you're inspired enough to write down an idea, or to even kick start a project, you need to go far enough that you're committed and can't back out.

This could mean:

  • Posting about it on social
  • Briefing someone in your team to start the work
  • Engaging an external partner so more people are involved

Whatever it is, make sure it commits you far enough that you can't back out, and make sure you do it fast...

Why? Because...

#3 - Like Most Great Feelings, Inspiration Is Fleeting

Fortune favours the action takers.

Have you ever noticed those who are quick to think and quicker to act tend to be 'luckier'?

There's good reason for that... Entrepreneurship is about taking risks.

I once heard Ben Francis, Gymshark CEO, say that the one thing that all the billionaires in his network had in common was that they were all "unbelievably good at taking risks".

Risk taking is hard and it requires confidence. Look at inspiration like free confidence - use it to be bolder and quicker in your decision making... Don't wait for it to drift into the ether.

Excellent piece, Oli. I've become better at keeping the false guilt at bay when a story idea, for example, or a sudden big urge to break schedule and create takes me. Flow is everything and deadlines/commitments/life notwithstanding, it's important to listen to the feelings that trigger it.
