When I was terrified of the gym...

Believe it or not, I was once myself terrified of the gym.
Granted this was a very long time ago as through playing rugby from a young age I became pretty interested in lifting weights around the age of 14.
However I’ll never forget my first day in the gym on my own.
After about 6months of begging my mum to sign me up to the local community gym down the road - she finally caved.
I walked up there all excited, then completely freaked out when I saw how busy it was and how many massive blokes were in the free weights area.
I was even too scared to go in the changing room so I headed off to the far right corner, where I placed my jumper on top of a metal filing cabinet and went on the cross trainer for about 20mins before turning round and heading back home.
I was a member of that gym for about 6months and I could count one hand the number of times I went there. My mum, realising she was wasting her money, obviously cancelled.
The older we get the harder it becomes for our ego to be a complete novice at something (I’ve recently had this experience with golf).
When we’re new to something and we expose ourselves to a new environment we’ll build up a false story I our heads that everyone around is a pro and that we are out of our depth.
This is also why so many people have put CrossFit on a pedestal because they think they’ll walk into their local box and everyone will be regional athletes banging out 10 unbroken ring muscle ups when in actual fact and very tiny percentage of members are able to do this.
You might be thinking that you don’t need a gym membership to be fit and healthy and you’re absolutely right.
However I would challenge that for the vast majority of people who only like doing home workouts it’s mainly because there’s still the big fear element of going to the gym.
And I think one of the most powerful and liberating things you can do for yourself is conquer that fear and turn the gym into a place of comfort and stress relief.
A different environment to unplug from all the every day stresses of work and family commitments where you can focus solely on you.
That’s why I think getting comfortable in the gym is much more powerful than simply lifting weights and getting a good sweat on.
