"When I go home, I feel like I accomplished something." Let's meet a Nursing Home Attendant in Whitehorse, Yukon.

Let's continue our series meeting people who work in Yukon healthcare.

Today we check in with Laxmi who has 15 years experience working in the Yukon. She says people will find support and a sense of community in the territory.

Today she is a Nursing Home Attendant at Whistle Bend Place, in Whitehorse.

"Working together makes my day. Later, when I go home, I feel like I accomplished something. I feel satisfied with my work. So that makes my day," she says.

Let's meet Laxmi and learn about her role with the Government of Yukon.

What makes for a good day at work?

To meet my residents’ needs is the first thing. If they’re happy, we’re happy!

Also what makes a good day is great communication and collaboration with my other teams. It’s not just nursing: We work with different roles like therapy assistants, kitchen aides, housekeeping and our managers and supervisors.

Working together makes my day. Later, when I go home, I feel like I accomplished something. I feel satisfied with my work. So that makes my day.

What advice might you give to somebody who's considering a career in the Yukon?

I would say it's a great place to come and work. People are great. They're very helpful. And other thing is competitive benefits. The pay is very good compared to other provinces.

It’s a great place to raise your children I would say as well! When I came, I was a single mom. I got so much help from strangers. They were not my family, but they helped me out to raise my children. Like helping out with, you know, taking them to school sometimes or babysitting them when I'm working. You don't see that in big, big cities, right?

The community support was great.

Career-wise, the Yukon gives lots of opportunities to grow. You're not just stuck in one place. Your government will support you for a continuing education. If you are a nursing home attendant, you get an opportunity to pursue a career as a nurse.

If you are a practical nurse, you can pursue a career as a registered nurse.

They support you with that. So that's a great thing.
