“When Will I Be Famous?” – Redefining success!
Some of you may be old enough to remember the late 80s song, “When Will I Be Famous?” by Bros - a tune that found its way onto my radio during last week's commute. Yes, I admit to indulging in 80s music and accept it’s a questionable choice. Despite that, it has a catchy tune, catchy in a way that I began to think about the nature of success. This question, while simple, captures the broader social yearning for recognition. Yet, as my journey with the Great Schools Trust has unfolded, my perception of success has undergone a significant transformation. I've come to understand that true success isn't so much about the spotlight on oneself but rather the illumination we give to others.
In the early stages of my career, like many others, I was driven by the concept of success as some distant destination. This perspective, however, carries inherent risks. It can transform into a solitary quest, obscuring the needs and contributions of our colleagues and peers. Experience has taught me that a singular focus on the destination can render the journey empty of meaning, to the point where it can even emerge as a fixation, or as we call it at GST, destination disease.
The Pitfalls of a Destination-Driven Mindset
A mindset fixated on a specific destination can be treacherous. It can lead to isolation, narrow our perspectives and foster a leadership style that is more autocratic than democratic. It cultivates an environment where the means are justified by the end, neglecting the growth, wellbeing and ambitions of those we are meant to lead. In such a setting, the journey morphs into a race rather than a collective exploration, converting the workplace into a battleground of competition and politics rather than cooperation.
The Transformation from ‘Me’ to ‘Them’
Transitioning from an individual contributor to a leader marked a pivotal shift in my understanding of success. Leadership brought a revelation – the insight that my role was not merely to chase personal achievements but to shepherd, support and journey alongside others towards a shared vision. It dawned on me that effective leadership isn't about reaching a fictitious finish line but about laying the groundwork for others to discover their calling and strive confidently towards it.

Embracing the Journey Together
Embracing the journey acknowledges that success is not an individual pursuit but a communal endeavour. It's about fostering an atmosphere where each person is valued, heard, and inspired to evolve. It's about charting not only our own path but setting the course for our teams, our students, and our broader community in a direction inspired by purpose.
In this collective journey, each milestone is a communal triumph and obstacles become collective lesson, as we each make progress towards creating a legacy of empowerment and development. The true destination is not a personal accolade but the success and fulfilment of those we guide.
Reflecting on the question, “When Will I Be Famous?”, I now perceive it through a transformed lens. Fame, in its most profound sense, isn't about the applause at a journey's end. It's about the lives we impact, the growth we foster and the positive change we generate along the way. It's about evolving from a solo artist into the conductor, where every note, every player is essential to the overall sound.
To avoid 'destination disease,' as a leader, it's crucial to frequently ask yourself, "Who will replace me if I move on?" If the answer to that question draws a blank, it's a significant indicator that your leadership approach might be overly self-reliant. Such a scenario often suggests that while you've been diligently climbing your own ladder of success, you might have inadvertently neglected to fortify the rungs beneath you — the very ones your team members need to climb. Combatting ‘destination disease’ isn't just about hitting personal milestones but also about diligently investing in the development of your team. By ensuring that you're cultivating a team competent enough to step into your shoes, you're securing your school or trusts future and modelling transformative leadership. It's about creating an environment where growth is mutual and success is shared — a testament to a leadership style that's as much about 'others' as it is about ambition.
Let's exchange insights on this and redefine success not as an individual conquest but as a collective journey towards purpose #Leadership #CollectiveSuccess #JourneyTogether #GreatSchoolsTrust
