Then if there are chips, star cracks and deep scratches on oven molds they can be expertly repaired with mold repair putty or tooling gel coat or epoxy putty and sanded smoot
First things we need to do before repairing the mold
- First we take the mold and make sure the surface is clean, dry and free from oil, grease, wax or other contaminants.
- Then ensure that ambient temperatures are above 16°C to ensure rapid and complete cure.
- Mold repair times are based on temperatures of 25°C.
- All mold releases that we have previously applied must be removed using a chemical stripper recommended by the mold release manufacturer
If we work as mentioned below, we will get good results.
- First, if we are repairing there, we need to mask the area around it. Doing so will give a clarity on the place of repair and we will work with less putti while applying putti.
- We want maximum bond so first we have to roughen the place by grinding or sanding if there are any cracks and damage.
- The next important thing to do is to remove the sharp edges.
- After that the grinding or sanding area should be cleaned with a white cloth. After washing it should be cleaned with acetone chemical.
- Then putty should be made using tooling grade resin. We should use only the putty that we have made without waste and lumps. Putty preparation plays a very important role in mold repair.
- Because of the faster gel time Putty can only be a catalyst Applied in 6-8 minutes. Catalysis at Mix thoroughly with catalyst.
- I recommend using a gram scale if the catalyst is added to insure the correct amount. To ensure proper adhesion, rub catalytic putty on the repair area and follow with a spatula, putty knife or squeegee. Completely fill in the void putty in all working directions. For exceptionally deep repairs, repeat the process to ensure a porous surface.
- After applying the putty we get a little shrinkage so apply a little more putty to allow for that shrinkage
note. If however, a mold has numerous defects and an overall dull and rough finish, resurfacing is necessary
