When Great Leaders walk.
Leaders who trust only themselves.
We know them all. The leaders who are always right, who have a vision and a mission. Follow them and all will be right. They do not like when they are questioned or when someone brings up a valuable idea. If you can't follow them you better quit. There no longer is a place for you!
Leaders who trust their people.
There are also leaders who work the other way around. They first talk to their staff. They ask them how they can be of service. Then they share their vision and ideas with their staff. Trusting them to get the job done. These leaders:
- Put their staff in front.
- Help their staff when and where needed.
- Take more of the blame when things go wrong.
- Take less of the fame when things go right.
- Really lead people.
Leaders who back their staff and walk behind them can see more and lead better than leaders who are in front and hope that their followers keep up pace.
"To lead people, walk behind them"

5 年I believe to be a great leader you also need great intuition. It’s good to walk behind but sometimes you may feel it’s right to walk in front.

6 年A Leader is one who chooses to walk along side of their colleagues, not in from or behind, but with so that together they can build a Team in which all are welcomed and each has value to the whole Team! Though the Leader may have more experience, yielding to team members opens the possibility that working together they will all achieve more than with one individually! And, in the process, those who have less experience begin to blossom into Leaders with skills they develop as they progress! Teamwork tends to develop people quickly and is a reflection of their Leadership potential!

6 年Yes, a good leader should trust their staff, but if their staff comes under fire, the best leaders will work hard to defend and protect their staff and help them feel safe. Trust is earned. And given when deserved.?

6 年A good leader never asks their troops to do that which they themselves are not willing to do. I always remember this from being in the military and feel it's a great perspective. Leading by example is paramount to gaining your subordinates respect.
