When the gorilla weighs 6,000 pounds, not 600.
When Amazon moved HQ1 to Seattle's South Lake Union in 2010, the estimates were 6,000 workers would arrive too. Now it is up to 45,000. So the national competition for HQ2 uses different metrics. Latest word: Amazon favors the Washington DC area.
One Maryland competitor is offering $8.5 billion in incentives. Or insanity-ives, if you have a different perspective. The image of planting a large tree in a small garden also comes to mind. With an economic heavyweight like Amazon crashing through the forest and arriving on the beachhead, other businesses have to take notice. Will rents and mortgages rise to a point that it affects start-ups, existing employers and residents?
As the DC area becomes the focus of the HQ2 competition, everyone watches and waits. Once announced, there will be no ignoring the 6,000-pound gorilla.
