When to Give Up on Our Dreams?

Last week, I explored a powerful question: Are we ever too old to follow our dreams? The resounding answer was a definitive NO! Age is not a barrier to pursuing our aspirations. But, there's a crucial caveat – we must take that first step towards our goal.

Today, I delve into a more challenging question: "When do we give up on our dreams?" This question troubles me deeply. Why? Because surrendering and giving up often seems like the easier path. Remember, the only true failure is the failure to try.

The difficulty in answering this question stems from the multitude of distractions we face. We are surrounded by doubters – people who question our dreams, family members who lose faith in us, colleagues who label our ambitions as foolish. Even those who don't vocalize their skepticism often reveal it through their expressions. Advice like "Get a stable government job; the benefits are great" is commonplace. But what happens when rejections pile up, making it hard to find motivation? It's tough to chase dreams with looming electricity bills.

My advice? Don't quit your day job, but don't stop working towards your main goal either. It's true that "when the going gets tough, the tough get going." However, even the tough can feel overwhelmed. In such moments, don't walk away from your dreams; instead, step back, take a deep breath, and silence the internal naysayers replaying in your mind after each setback.

I'm not just a dreamer; I'm a believer in making dreams a reality. I recognize that my imperfections make me unique. If things don't work out the first time, at least you've learned what doesn't work, putting you ahead in your journey. Treat yourself with kindness, and speak to yourself as you would uplift your best friend in times of doubt. Focus on the positive feedback you receive, letting it drown out any uncertainties.

So, my message is clear: never give up, keep going. Along the way, you might find yourself exactly where you need to be, perhaps not where you initially envisioned, but in a place even better than you could have imagined.

Remember, dreams do come true, not despite our imperfections, but because of them. Give yourself some grace, and continue marching forward. Your journey might just surprise you with its destination.
