When the eyes are the prize
In Chapter 4 of #BoundaryLab called 'On Balance', I explore the decisions, considerations and tradeoffs that go into tournament design and scheduling. This is just one example of the many challenges of sports governance.
A sports event organiser has many stakeholders' interests and demands to balance. There are teams, players, fans, commercial partners and many others each of whom wants a different thing, often at the cost of other stakeholders' interests. Sports governing bodies have handled this balance differently, based on their contexts. Although sports governance is not a zero sum game, it is unlikely that everyone will always be pleased with any decision.
Here's a video introduction to the chapter.
If you were governing a sport and designing an event - such as the cricket, football or rugby World Cup - how would you balance the commercial drivers of your sport with other interests and demands? What are the short and long term gains and losses of your chosen position?
