The Covid-19 pandemic has changed a lot about the world of work. One of the biggest changes is the massive and sudden increase in the number of people who now find themselves working from home.
While working at home brings with it its own challenges and rewards for employees and employers alike, it’s interesting to think about how having employees work from home might save an employer money. When the Covid-19 pandemic eventually ends, no doubt some workers will leave their home offices behind and return to their workplaces. But it seems likely that at least a portion of the workforce might want to continue to work from home, and their employers might want that too.
While information is still emerging about the financial impacts on employers related to this specific period of working from home during Covid-19, there is a fair amount of information available about the working from home, or telecommuting, that went on before Covid-19.
For example,?Mary Kelly explains?that many employees are more productive, less stressed, cost their employer less in overhead, and spend less money themselves when they work from home.
As Kelly points out, the lower overhead per employee is a common reason employers benefit when employees work from home. Kelly cites a savings to employers of $11,000 per employee per year when allowing employees to work from home just half of the time. The benefits don’t end there, though. The employees themselves also save between $2,000 and $7,000 of their own money per year, mainly in reduced costs associated with traveling back and forth from work and buying food during the work day.
Kelly also points out that workers who work from home are more productive, less stressed, and less likely to use sick time. This is especially important during the current pandemic when a cold or other normally minor illness might put a person at greater risk for contracting Covid-19, and even just stress alone can have a negative impact on a person’s immune system.

In addition to the benefits to current employees and employers from telecommuting, the savings employers are realizing as a result of so many of their employees working from home may mean those employers can afford to hire more employees. This would benefit the employers by giving them a larger, more efficient, and more powerful workforce. This would also benefit society, as unemployment or underemployment is associated with a myriad of negative health effects that are especially deleterious for individuals and for society as a whole during the current pandemic.
Using the savings employers realize as a result of employees working from home during the pandemic to invest more in their workforce by hiring more employees represents an opportunity for employers to do well by doing good in a difficult time.
