When It Doesn't Go Your Way

In the semi-final game between UConn and Iowa at the 2024 Women's Final Four, a referee’s last-minute call stirred up a lot of emotions. With only nine seconds left, a moving screen against UConn was called, handing Iowa the ball, who eventually won the close game. Yes, it caused an uproar, but as Paige Buecker stated, “Everybody can make a big deal about that one single play, but not one single play wins or loses a basketball game." Three thoughts come to mind regarding leadership when things don’t go the way we want them to go:
1. Dust Off and Keep Rolling: Life's full of challenges, and leadership is about bouncing back when challenges or seemingly bad calls hit you square in the face. When that call was made, both teams had to shrug it off and stay focused. UConn had to figure out another way, and Iowa had to seize that opportunity.
2. Own It and Move On: Leaders take responsibility, no matter what. Yeah, that particular call hurt UConn, but both teams had to own their performance. It's easy to point fingers, but real leaders know it's on them to step up, whether celebrating a win or taking a tough loss. It's all about owning it, good or bad.

3. Enjoy the Ride: Beyond the scoreboard, it's the journey that counts. Wins and losses are just part of the story. It's about the challenges you endure, the friendships made, and the lessons learned along the way. So, whether you're cutting down nets or picking yourself up from the floor, remember to enjoy the ride.
As the dust settles from THAT call, remember: one play might make waves, but it's the sum of all parts that define the game. Keep dusting off the setbacks, own it, and take in every moment along the way.
