When does the Placement Week begin at your campus?
When does Placement week start at your Business school ?
You are all here to take that “big leap” in your career and Placement week is one of the most competitive and emotional times in the MBA students’ tenure. It is the first job post your degree into the corporate world. A few weeks back when you were making your final selection amongst the multiple campuses you might have got through, a key criterion to select the MBA campus was “How the placement at the end of the program is or what the average salary of the institute is”. This is by no means a desire to disrupt the common mindset as many of the ranking mechanisms for B school consider placements as a key criterion for evaluation but the fact remains that a B school has earned its reputation through industry oriented academic curriculum, great infrastructure, renowned faculty, rigorous research papers published and the pedagogy which is often taken for granted.
The irony is that when the students joining are asked during the induction – “So which organization do you wish to join” there are quite a few blank faces in the room. Many would leave it to destiny depending on which companies can come to campus. In that case people could have saved a lot of money by just going to a placement agency and floating a well-designed CV. You have NOT joined a Placement agency. ?
Looking at both the perspectives and without taking an early bias, my view to the current students who have enrolled is “YOUR PLACEMENT WEEK STARTED YESTERDAY” and here is what you should be doing -
1.?Define your future in the most micro molecular way possible. Write it down everywhere so that you internalize, live it every day. Go after it like crazy. Choose the papers that you are passionate about, not the ones that will get you a job. If you don't design your own life plan, chances are you'll fall into someone else's plan. And guess what they have planned for you? Not much.
2.??????Attend all classes with pre preparation. You have invested a decent sum of money to gain knowledge. All your batch mates are equally qualified to get the limited seats of your dream company. Remember Hardwork works harder when talent does not work hard enough.
3.?Summer internship is as critical as final placements. Aim for a PPO. Engage with all the alumni in the organization that you intern at, even before you join through the alumni website imtalumni.com. Identify key stakeholders in the organization who can enable your PPO and work with them.
4.?Focus on building your Personal Brand and make your CV marketable. Engage in building your social media profile with things that are future relevant. Putting a vacation picture on LinkedIn is hara-kiri, invest in a professional photograph. Clubs and committees, college festivals have their own positive advantages in overall development but don’t lose sight of the larger picture and goal.
5.?Build genuine relationships

·?With your professors: This is not the first batch they are teaching. They have created more success stories in the industry through their previous students than you can imagine.
·?With your batchmates: Some of them will becomes CEOs / CXOs soon.
· With your alumni: They will have a different kind of affection for you that goes much beyond a job hunt or reference check.
Lastly, you have joined IMT and believe it or not – it is the best place for you to do your MBA. Remember the movie Kung Fu Panda – when Po is selected as the dragon warrior and Mater Shifu tells Grand Master Oogway there must be a mistake. Oogway refuses and says “There are no accidents (coincidences) in life." ?You are where you are supposed to be and it is up to you to leverage the opportunity every moment. I don’t want to sound like “Virus” from the movie 3 Idiots and make you join a “rat race”, but “Craft your own destiny” and enjoy every moment of your life with passion. ?
I continue to learn from our alumni and hence concluding with a quote from a senior alumni Krish Dhanam, he says - ?“Plan with Attitude, Prepare with Aptitude, Participate with Servitude, Receive with Gratitude and that should be enough to separate you from the multitudes”
All the best, welcome on board once again as an IMTian for Life.
