When Does Employee Surveillance Go Too Far?

The Investigation

The employee surveillance request RGH Investigations received was initially fairly straightforward. A woman was having an affair with her previous supervisor for about a year. They were both married. The woman suspected that he was cheating on her, along with his wife. When there were promotions, she was passed up. This made her suspicious, and contacted us for help. As usual, RGH Investigations opened up a surveillance case. We were instructed to observe him and figure out if he was cheating on the woman. The woman decided to file an Inspector General Report and report him for stealing and leaving work early on certain days. Ultimately, we found that the boyfriend was not cheating on her, and was only spending more time with his kids. She mentioned she wanted RGH Investigations to contact the current wife and verbally accuse him of doing unfavorable things. RGH Investigations stopped the business relationship with her, as we found these requests to be unprofessional.

The Role of the Private Investigator

A private investigator is always here to help the needs of the client. But unfortunately, if we are being used to make unreasonable requests, we will reconsider the business relationship due to the consequences. A private investigator will not accuse an individual of unfavorable or unlawful activity. Our job is to provide solid evidence of the situation and possibly assist the client in court. We do not act as law enforcing officers and cannot make arrests. We cannot enter a suspected person’s house. We only act within legal boundaries. The work of a private investigator is sometimes highly emotionally driven. In this case, the woman was driven by her emotions to follow her boyfriend to great lengths to catch him cheating. We must always remain unbiased and refuse to become emotionally involved in the case. Other cases RGH Investigations took on followed a similar theme of ethicality. In our previous blog, there were two obvious opinions. The elusive nurse, who was trying to save the integrity of the company she worked for and her job, and the client’s perspective, attempting to get the nurse to testify so that there is evidence against the company to sue. RGH Investigations only presented the facts of our observations, and were not involved in the ethicality of the case.
