When the doctor says 'you can't go home'...

After a day spent at a Senior's Expo one thing became very apparent...there's a lot a denial from our senior Loved One's about just how safe they are at home. Most exhibitors were focused on products to keep people at home longer.

I'm all for people remaining independent as long as they're physically and emotionally safe to do so. Yet, despite what they're telling us, there comes a time when reality changes and suddenly our Loved One's are no longer safe to live independently at home.

Recently I've worked with two families where the Loved One were very determined to stay living at home until health changes caused emergency actions.

The first one was determined to stay at home so he could keep all of his 'naughty' habits! But it was dangerous, because of his refusal to use a mobility aid, as he was gambling with the risk of a fall every time he moved around the house...and fall he did! And fractured his hip, he was still determined to go home until the doctors said NO, he needed permanent care!

The second was living at home and her dementia was so advanced caring for herself became an issue and cooking was a fire risk as she'd forget to turn off the stove! Oh and personal hygiene had gone out the window. A quick trip to hospital with an infection resulted in doctors deciding permanent care was required.

The thing is, while we care for our Loved One's it's our responsibility to make sure they're safe. There are government initiatives available to help keep people safe at home for as long as possible...yet sometimes we just have to step up and, for their own well being, help guide them to safety.

With more than 10 years of experienced is helping guide people to Aged Care, we're here to help provide solutions and remove the stress from the process.
