When Could a Recruiter Use ChatGPT?

There are still many recruiters and HR Professionals in Talent Acquisition to experience ChatGPT or other similar products, as tools they should be engaging with for recruiting.? Those of you reading this who are experiencing the amazing powers of potential for these Large Language Models (LLM), Machine Learning (ML) and AI will already be filling your brains with many ideas of how to use them in recruiting, and subsequently thinking about them playing an important in the future of Talent Acquisition.?

One of my reasons for writing about ChatGPT and other AI products is to help inform the many recruiters and HR people who still haven’t heard about these revolutionary products. While many people have heard of ChatGPT, it does not necessarily mean they would know what they would use it for, in a day-to-day recruitment role. I have created a ChatGPT Recruiter Quadrant to help show that no matter what your experience level in recruitment is, you could still be benefitting from the this new form of artificial intellegence in your day job.

The ChatGPT Recruiter Quadrant?

Personally, I always find a graphic very helpful to visualise and understand the options. I have created this quadrant to help recruiters and HR people determine whether it is advantageous for a recruiter to use ChatGPT in their day-to-day recruitment activities.?

Quadrant models are useful for analysing complex decisions that involve multiple factors. They divide a decision into four quadrants based on two key factors that are important for making the decision. In this case, the two factors we will use are the level of complexity of the recruitment process and the level of experience of the recruiter.?

Let me explain how this quadrant model works:?

Quadrant 1: In this quadrant, the recruitment process is relatively simple, and the recruiter has a low level of experience. ChatGPT can be a helpful tool for these recruiters, as it can provide guidance and assistance in handling common recruitment tasks, such as screening resumes and scheduling interviews.?

Example: A new Manager who is hiring their first employee. They have little experience with recruitment and may struggle with tasks such as screening resumes and conducting interviews. The recruiter can use ChatGPT to help support the Manager with specific guidance and assistance around unbiased interview questions.?

Quadrant 2: In this quadrant, the recruitment process is simple, and while the recruiter has a high level of experience, ChatGPT can provide the recruiter with different sourcing approaches, candidate engagement material and knowledge on new areas, skills and industries.?

Example: A seasoned recruiter for a retail company who is hiring for a difficult role such may require some help in candidate outreach, to engage with sought after candidates. While they have extensive experience with recruitment and could handle the tasks on their own without the need for ChatGPT, the ability to get help in creating appealing and specific InMails would help in candidate engagement.?

Quadrant 3: In this quadrant, the recruitment process is complex, and the recruiter has a low level of experience. ChatGPT may still be useful, but it may not be enough on its own. Recruiters in this quadrant may benefit from additional training or support from more experienced colleagues to effectively use ChatGPT and handle the complexity of the recruitment process.?

Example: A recruiter for a large tech company who is hiring for a specialised role that requires a deep understanding of the industry. They have limited experience with this type of recruitment and may need additional support to effectively use ChatGPT and handle the complexity of the sourcing and engagement of prospective candidates for this role.?

Quadrant 4: In this quadrant, the recruitment process is complex, and the recruiter has a high level of experience. ChatGPT would be useful to help develop new strategies and methods for handling complex recruitment tasks as well as helping to build senior level talent pipelines. ?

Example: A senior recruiter for a financial services company who is hiring for a high-level executive role. They have a wealth of experience in recruitment and have developed their sourcing strategies. ChatGPT may be useful in helping build specific sourcing strategies in new industries as well as providing prompts to identify new pipelines of potential talent.?

Overall, ChatGPT can be a valuable tool for recruiters in many different scenarios, but it's not a one-size-fits-all solution. By considering the complexity of the recruitment process and the level of experience of the recruiter, you can determine whether ChatGPT is likely to be advantageous in a particular scenario. Whatever you do, be curious. There is so much to learn regarding using AI in recruitment and we are only just scraping thew surface of this subject. Read as much as you can and go exploring down the many rabbit holes you will find yourself in, because you just don’t know what benefits you will find down them. This model may well help you in give you some ideas of what you could be using ChatGPT for.?

Using The ChatGPT Recruiter Quadrant to Help Set Objectives?

Another way that you could use this tool is to use it for helping recruiters set objectives on reaching the different stages of understanding of ChatGPT in recruitment. For example, a recruiter could use this quadrant to set their own objectives by identifying their current level of experience and the recruitment tasks they need to attain. Here are some specific ways a recruiter could use this quadrant to set their own objectives:?

For recruiters in quadrant 1, their objective could be to use ChatGPT to streamline their recruitment process and attract high-quality candidates. Specific objectives could include:?

  • Improving their ability to screen resumes effectively using ChatGPT.?
  • Enhancing their ability to schedule interviews and manage their time efficiently using ChatGPT.?
  • Improving their communication with candidates using ChatGPT to provide accurate and helpful information.?

For recruiters in quadrant 2, their objective could be to use ChatGPT to develop their skills and experience to handle more complex recruitment tasks and take on leadership roles. Specific objectives could include:?

  • Enhancing their ability to attract and hire top talent for specialised roles by using ChatGPT to write better job adverts.?
  • Developing their skills in candidate assessment and interviewing.?
  • Use ChatGPT to build template libraries to speed up processes to help exceed recruitment targets.?

For recruiters in quadrant 3, their objective could be to use ChatGPT in combination with additional training and support to handle more complex recruitment tasks and attract high-quality candidates. Specific objectives could include:?

  • Enhancing their ability to source candidates for specialised roles using ChatGPT.?
  • Improving their ability to conduct assessments using ChatGPT, such as technical skills tests or behavioural interviews.?
  • Building strong relationships with candidates using ChatGPT to provide personalised and helpful guidance.?

For recruiters in quadrant 4, their objective could be to leverage their extensive experience and expertise to provide strategic guidance to hiring managers and other stakeholders. Specific objectives could include:?

  • Providing personalised and strategic guidance to candidates using ChatGPT.?
  • Conducting effective assessments using ChatGPT to identify top talent for specialised roles.?
  • Use ChatGPT to help create and devise strategic planning for talent acquisition.?

Overall, a recruiter could use this quadrant to set specific objectives based on their current level of experience and the recruitment tasks they need to focus on to achieve their career goals. By setting specific objectives, a recruiter can measure their progress, identify areas for improvement, and ultimately improve their performance.?

In Conclusion?

ChatGPT and other AI tools are not going to be for everyone, I know that from experience in my organisation. They will be plenty of objection and negativity around this subject for months to come. I hope I have provided a simple tool here to help demystify this from a recruiting perspective, and help demonstrate that this new AI world is one we should be embracing in HR.??
