WHEN IT COMES TO PRODUCTION CENTERS, LESS IS MORE. HERE’S WHY.

By Peter Fuzesi, Co-Founder and CEO of Asian Egg Bank

Often in business, more is more. More clients, more growth, more success. I’m here to tell you that when it comes to the number of production centers my egg bank uses, less is definitely more. In our experience, it has led to better outcomes for us and our clients.

There are obvious benefits to using multiple production centers. The number of centers increases the number of donors you can process at once. In addition, having facilities within driving distance to a donor’s location cuts down on the associated travel costs. But I would argue that there are even more pros to focusing on just one production center. It comes down to control, both of protocols and quality.

My team at Asian Egg Bank operates with one production center and one dedicated lab to handle all aspects of the egg retrieval and freezing process. Different centers, even if owned and operated by the same company, have different physicians and can have different protocols. Different protocols for stimulation, different laboratory approaches, differences in processing a patient’s samples. Egg retrieval and freezing is a delicate process, and reducing these variables by limiting the number of centers to one that has the same processes makes it easier to control the science and achieve the desired results. Plus, cryogenic shipping is always somewhat nerve-wracking; so if you have multiple centers, and a centralized distribution facility, that egg has to be shipped twice. With one center, it just has to travel once.

At Asian Egg Bank, we perfected our donor stimulation protocol and our egg freezing and warming techniques internally before they are sent out to partner clinics. This was much easier and faster to do by focusing on one production center, because the data is available right away. We could see the quality of the outcomes immediately in blastocysts, embryos, pregnancies, and birth rates. We have been able to achieve a higher level of quality; there was still a learning curve, but it was much less than if there were variables introduced at additional centers and multiple teams’ processes to manage. As a result, we have a 90-95 percent recovery rate, and close to 60 percent blastocyst rate, and those are numbers that we’re proud of.
