When colleagues leave us, it makes us happy
There are various lenses you can look through to plan your career. Any lens is appropriate, as long as there is a lens
Let me suggest one based on my own experience
·??????Spend the first 20 years in 4 companies, approximately 5 years each
·??????Each company should be in a different industry
·??????Your next company should be in an industry that has higher level of customer transactions than your previous organization
·??????Pick a mix of Indian/MNC, Owner/Board run companies to experience different cultures
·??????Try and change a role every 18-24 months. The onus lies on you, hence start displaying restlessness after 12-15 months in a role, however only after you’ve delivered up to or beyond expectations
·??????Pick roles that require high level of inter functional collaboration and have a direct line of sight or are one step away from the customer
·??????As you move into a new role, regardless of your level, understand what your product offers to the customer, what does it cost you to produce that, and what does the customer pay. Try to reduce cost and enhance delivery, every day of your stay in the role
If you do that, repeatedly, across roles and companies, for 20 years, you’re ready to move from an Operating to the Strategic domain and should be able to build templates and frameworks for any function or firm in any industry, after a short induction.
People who leave us fall into 2 categories.?
·??????Ones who are following a plan and are at a specific stage of their plan. For the plan I've explained above, they'd be at the 5, 10, 15 or 20 year stage of their career
·??????People who are not following the above, or any other plan. They follow their instinct or opportunities
We are happy for the first because they are following a path that will help them grow into seasoned professionals, in a company or on their own. We thank them for their contributions, congratulate them on the move and wish them luck
We are also happy that the second lot are moving on and wish them even more luck, as they’d need a larger dose of it
That's why, when colleagues leave us, it makes us happy

2 年Interesting share Harit Nagpal People leave with a plan or without a plan. Every relationship has a life span, and hence leaving is a natural outcome also. Every exit also needs to be looked at from the point of view of the supervisor's role. The supervisor's role (negative influence) is a noticeably big reason for people leaving. In case people are allowed to speak freely at the time of exit interview, we will have another reason to thank them ??
