When Cognitive Load Theory meets Self-Determination Theory
Self-Determination Theory is an established motivational theory, which is beginning to account for factors that contribute to student motivation toward learning. Despite multiple factors influencing student motivation, they are all underpinned by three fundamental needs. The need to be effective in one’s environment – competence; the need to develop deep and meaningful relationships with others – relatedness; and the need to endorse one’s own behavior and decisions – autonomy. When these three fundamental needs are satisfied, it explains all the factors that cause intrinsic motivation.
