When Breath Means Action

When Breath Means Action

"You are capable of getting through this"

No matter your fear, it will pass through.

No matter your anger, it too will pass.

If you don't know how yet - that's ok.

And if it gets worse - that's also ok.

Just know that there is ONE guarantee.

You will get through this.

We shared this concept during one of our collective experiences with leaders this past week. As leaders who support others, they too suffer from regulation difficulties and the responsibility of counterbalancing their role as leaders during these changing times.

They don't have the option always to express their own emotional states.

And sometimes, they don't have the time to reflect personally.

As parents, therapists, and leaders, this is happening to us all through our collective experiences. Something as simple as taking a breath activates the reticular formation (part of the brainstem), whether conscious or unconscious. It interrupts the loop response just in the action itself!

So when we say, "Breathe so you can think" or "Breathe so you can execute", we are not just speaking about presence and calm, we are speaking about initiation and activation. On a physiological level. It creates the opportunity for the stress response to be interrupted and a new pathway to enter. Try it!

Pro-tip: Need your child or someone else in your life to interrupt that stress loop? Never tell them to breathe. Just 'be' in front of them and take a big breath yourself. That in and of itself will create a shift. Tell us how it goes!
