When is the best time to make changes?
Change is inevitable. It is part of life and is part of business. However, there is a big difference in when and how changes are made as to what outcome happens and how easy and effective those changes end up being. So, when is the best time to make changes to your business?
While positive changes can be made at any time, the best time to make changes is when things START to become out of balance. Right at the first few wobbles, or when things start to go backwards and get off track.
Why? Because this is when it is easiest to make changes and get a positive outcome. It also requires less effort and action to get the momentum and make the necessary changes.
But this is not when we would normally make changes!
Usually when things start getting a bit wobbly or are heading downhill, we wait.
We sit and quietly hope that it will all work itself out, not wanting to admit that we have control of the direction it will take. But this often leads to us burying our head in the sand and ignoring the problems that gradually get bigger. Reassuring ourselves that it isn’t “that bad,” or we can have the attitude of “it’ll be right mate.”
But this is exactly when you want to be looking at them! This is the best time to adjust and fix things because it takes way less effort, and you can avoid a lot of pain and struggle along the way.
Would you rather make little tweaks often to grow a thriving business or wait till you must make major changes when things hit a crisis point?
With the added pain, hardship and stress that comes with hitting a crisis point (and I have had many of them), I certainly know which one I would prefer!
Let me give you an example of this in action…
One of my client’s business’ revenue had dropped for 2 consecutive months. This got picked up during our monthly coaching session and we quickly got to the root cause of why the drop in revenue happened. It wasn’t a massive drop, but significant enough for me to see it and know that it needed to be investigated before a downward trend took hold.
We made a plan to fix the issue and get the revenue back up. In the past when she had a similar drop in revenue happen, she would get into avoidance mode and not want to look at the issue which of course led to the issue (and the pain that came with it) lasting longer than it had to. Keeping her business on that downward trend was likely going to mean that her business would be in serious trouble in a few more months if left unchecked.
At this point, it was an easy fix. A few tweaks and a clear action plan actually meant that she surpassed the goal of getting the revenue back up to the old level and ended up tripling her revenue in the following months!
This is one of the many benefits of having an experienced business coach, they can pick up on small issues that need adjusting before they turn into a disaster, and before you may even see them!
It is so much easier to fix things that aren’t working quite right, rather than having to deal with major challenges because the little “niggles” got left and ignored. Think about momentum. It is easier to move a moving boulder than it is to move one that is stationary. Equally it is much easier to get a business that is doing ok and uplevel it to be doing great. It takes a lot more time, hard work and effort to get a business that is in a dire state to be doing ok.
While most people will leave issues till when they get bad, it is better to make the changes when things are doing ok or even when things are going great! This is where you have, less effort, maximum results!!
We can let go of the struggle and start embracing more ease in our lives and businesses. It doesn’t have to be so hard all the time.
So, is now the time for you to let go of the struggle?
Take some time in the next week to assess every area of your business. How is everything running? How is the cashflow? How are your processes working? Do you have a steady stream of leads and clients?
If there are big problems. You want to be getting onto that ASAP!
If things are not working as efficiently as they could. It is probably time to also make some changes.
Don’t be afraid of change. Even when it is uncomfortable and requires you to make some hard choices. Embrace it. Your business and life will thank you for it.
Here’s to you creating your own amazing business!
In gratitude,
Kim.
