When Architecture Goes Deadly Meeting Wildfire: LA

This text will start by saying: “Many condolences and we pray for Los Angeles. My deepest sympathy goes out to LA at this difficult time.”

We are in the middle of a horrific wildfire in Los Angeles. USA history has never seen this type of destruction and damage since the big Chicago fire most probably and it is still burning as this text is being written. According to BBC News:” Paris Hilton, Billy Crystal and Adam Brody are among the celebrities who have lost homes in the deadly wildfires raging in Los Angeles.”

Getty Museum survived because, architects designed the galleries with double-walled construction, which also helped protect the precious art inside.

If we are lucky on the planet, we architects draw architectural sets that have planning for fire prevention. Fire prevention has and requires separate drawings and permits due to building regulations of the city that holds the architectural project.

Material selection, layout, and the incorporation of fire barriers are chosen with care for fire prevention. Firewall types fire door types fire preventive hardware all of these architectural elements can be selected as fireproof. Each choice an architect makes is a very serious move.

The key principle always and forever is designing open spaces that can help in fire management and making sure people have exits and escape routes that are drawn even in the schematic design of the drawing sets.

The iconic buildings currently threatened by wildfires in Los Angeles include landmarks in the Hollywood area and neighborhoods like Pacific Palisades. The latest blaze, the Sunset Fire, has prompted evacuations and is damaging both homes and notable landmarks.

LA wildfires have significant implications for architects, influencing their designs to prioritize fire prevention, resilience, and sustainability. Architects are increasingly incorporating fire-resistant materials, creating defensible space around structures, and utilizing landscape design to reduce fire risk. They also consider local climate and vegetation to develop homes and buildings that withstand not only fires but also other climate-related challenges.

Architects need to stay updated on local regulations and building codes related to wildfire risks to create safer environments.
