When Agile means Caring for People
Psychologist Bruce Tuckman came up with the memorable phrase "forming, storming, norming, and performing" in 1965. Since called the Tuckman Model.

When Agile means Caring for People

When an organization becomes Agile, the culture begins to change to a people-centric culture... that is, if its done right !

After training and coaching over 100 teams in the last 10 years, I have learned that the ability to care for people and to show you care is key to agile transformation. Why change for someone or something if you don't believe in them? Once people in agile teams / pods or groups begin to show that they care for one another, a change in behaviors begins to happen.

One can trace this change, in part, through the stages of what is classically known as the Tuckman Model (aka: Forming, Norming, Storming, Performing and Adjourning). The question is how do you move teams through the model and get them to mature and work a a true team- collaborating?

Some of this is taught, and much of this is modeled- from good behavior, examples, role-play, acting and watching other high-performing teams. I believe in changing behaviors through modeling. I have seen the results

The results are happier teams, faster sprints, cleaner burndowns, and overall more consistent delivery patterns in 6 to 10 weeks.

First and foremost, though, the Scrum Master, The Product Owner, and if there is one, the Agile coach must show caring for the people above the results. In a business setting- with constant pressure, this is hard. One good way to start is by looking at your team charter... and get your team involved in updating it or re-writing to the way you really want to work together.

The results are amazing, and you get to see people and teams working together more happily and more productively than ever before.

Have been using/teaching the ''Tuckman Model" for decades. It is fantastic and allow a non-subjective way of assessing performance of an individual (primarily) or an organization. Thankks for posting.
