When is additive convenient?
Everyone knows by now that additive technologies allow us to realize definitive parts in a very short time and with an ever higher level of precision, but the question that must be answered and that makes the difference is always the same:
When does additives cost less then traditional printing?
Here the answer cannot be unique, but it depends on:
Complexity of the geometry
The more the component has a complex geometry, the more 3D printing is obviously more convenient even in economic terms. Moreover, in situations where it is possible to realize, in a single component, a piece composed of three or more parts or in which there is also a lightening of the particular, there is no doubt that the additive is the solution.
Piece dimensions
The smaller the size of the part the more 3D printing is advantageous because it allows to fill the printing area with a number of pieces greater than one and therefore reduce the cost of printing each.
Material
If the material with which the piece can be printed is the same or is very similar to that used for final production, 3D printing becomes optimal also from an economic point of view.
Print run
Undoubtedly, 3D printing is still worthwhile when it comes to print runs of less than a thousand pieces because when the pieces become so many and we talk about productions for "large retailers" the mold is still more convenient.
