Today, I had a coffee with @Ineke Hurkmans, as we discussed the recent post by @miriam Frosi.
“How do we turn this around? As our efforts evaporate, like a drop of water on glowing steel plate” she shared.
Sadly, I agreed with her. This was my view as well, after years of trying to create awareness on how this could be turned around into win-win.
The common mindset is often that low-wage workers are not intelligent or motivated? This is completely not true.
Then comes the mindset that low-wage workers do the "easy jobs". Sorry, but once again, this is completely not true.
Lastly, we get comments like “but the wages are legally correct.” These same people tend to be oblivious to the facts, as they feel entitled to their higher salaried jobs.
You also drive slowly near schools, because it’s necessary. And in worst-case scenarios, the law is needed to enforce the safe speed limits. But you could always drive slower, correct?
Same for the salaries. The minimum wage is to legally there to protect, in the worst-case scenarios. But this is not working, and too many are caught in a vicious circle with the minimum-wage-trap.
Yes, the Financial Experts will claim that raising minimum wages will ruin the company's performance. Sorry, I honestly do not think so. In fact, it is my sound judgement that it will, not only Reduce Costs, but also Add Value to the company in a variety of ways. And the total benefit will a positive culture change towards a #HealthyOrganization.
So take a look, does your company employ low-wage workers? Are you willing to try something different? Based on #Trust and #Respect?
Would you like to #Addvalue to people’s lives? Question is #WhatWouldYouDo?
Look forward to hearing from you.
With kind regards,
Aroop

4 年Good relevant read. And I so agree.... It's shameless how people try & justify sub human minimum salaries and try to belittle these honest & hardworking people. If not higher salaries, a good idea would be to help these people with their kids school fees or school books or some basic medical insurance,.....anything that makes them feel inclusive. More empathy & humanity please
