WhatsApp's new feature, "WhatsApp Channels," allows users to follow updates from notable individuals and organizations within the app. This one-way broadcast tool presents updates in a separate "Updates" tab, distinct from regular chats.
Set to launch globally in over 150 countries, including India, users can discover channels based on their location or by searching names and categories. Channels will also be ranked by newness, activity, and follower count.
Prominent figures from India and globally, like the Indian Cricket team, Katrina Kaif, and even Mark Zuckerberg, have channels for followers. Zuckerberg's channel will provide insights into Facebook and WhatsApp developments.
Prioritizing privacy, WhatsApp ensures that followers' phone numbers and profile pictures remain hidden from admins and other followers. Channel histories last for 30 days, and users can react to updates with emojis. Reactions are private, and updates can be forwarded to chats or groups. Users can mute or unsubscribe from channels as desired.
For admins, channels can be created with existing or new WhatsApp accounts. They can modify updates for up to 30 days, after which they're removed from servers.
How to use WhatsApp Channels
1. Update your WhatsApp app to the latest version from the Google Play Store or the App Store.
2. Open WhatsApp and tap on the Updates tab at the bottom of the screen. You will see a list of channels that you can follow.
3. To follow a channel, tap on the ‘+’ button next to its name. You can also tap on the channel name to view its profile and description.
4. To add a reaction to a channel update, press and hold on to the message.
