What's Your Working Genius?

I love it when multiple things come up around the same time that seem to fit perfectly together. As I'm editing this recent episode of Vet Life Reimagined, I hear another podcast that aligns so well with the episode and the overall message I hope to present with the podcast.

Patrick Lencioni is well-known author and speaker on thriving and succeeding in the workplace. (Think The Five Dysfunctions of a Team book). Personally, he found himself bouncing between excitement and frustration at work. With his experience up to that point, he was able to distinguish 6 different types of work, but only two of those where he gained energy.

Sometimes we get caught up in an idea for our career. Sometimes we get caught up in the things that we HAVE to do to get from point A to point B (like veterinary school), but what if we could identify our true natural talents and strengths, find the work that allows us to do that more often, and avoid or get out of burnout? Just because we CAN do something - even really well - doesn't mean it's where we get our energy.

Lencioni uses the term working genius and even created an assessment for you to discover what your genius areas are. What if we could align our jobs and careers with our genius? We get job satisfaction and we don't lose talented people into the wrong roles and drain their energy.

Finding his "working genius" is what our podcast guest, Dr Steve Oehley BVSc , had to do, and he hit a rock bottom moment to realize it. I hope the episode allows you to stop and think about what are the things that allow you to thrive and learn to find where all the members of your team can thrive too. When people are in the right "seats" the whole business will be more successful and enjoyable.

Do you know your working genius? Are you able to live in most of the time at work?
