What's Your Walk-Up Song?

I was reading an article recently by INC.com about public speaking tips. They listed “at bat” or “walk-up music” as a great way to get ready for public speaking. In baseball, the hitter coming up has their walk-up music play on their way up to home plate to bat. It is meant to get them fired up or the crowd fired up, or both, if it’s really good. It can also serve the purpose of helping to focus or calm their nerves from the stressful situation.
At a client, I did an implementation with last year, we had the same discussion. We joked around about what music should be played before our meeting starts while we were waiting for everyone to log on. We would have a few songs each time loaded up, usually 80’s rock. It was fun and got everyone in the right mood and off on the same foot.
One time for a morning meeting, that I wanted to get everyone perked up and energized for, I played “Good Mornin’ Life” by Dean Martin. I thought it was perfect but then an audience member shouted “why are you playing Christmas music?” It was June. A swing…and a miss.
I’m wondering what your walk up music would be? Maybe you already have one that works well? If you had a few minutes with your music player and headphones on, what would you choose to play to get you ready to start a large meeting? Or what would you have play over the loud speakers as you walk out in front of hundreds of people? No judgement, if it works for you, it works!

3 年I know this is top of mind because they play it 500+ times while I am watching a baseball game but it's a good one. 'Opportunities" by Pet Shop Boys. Maybe more for the sales team?

3 年This is a hard choice for me, as I tend to have different moods on different days. On Monday, "Eye of the Tiger" by Survivor is a great one because it always gets me pumped up and ready for the week. For Wednesday, I would have to say "Living on A Prayer" by Bon Jovi, because it's halfway through the week and reminds me to keep going. On Friday, I would choose "Happy" by Pharrell Williams, because I am always happy on Fridays!

3 年You know I have many directions here as well, but I tend to lean towards my love for Seattle Sound - Dissident by Pearl Jam always gets me in a good mood and singing - also a good reminder to quit while you’re ahead and know when you’ve been beat; vulnerability is powerful, especially when you have the ability to remain in control of that feeling. Great post!

3 年I could go in many different directions with this but I think I will choose “Touch of Grey” by Grateful Dead.?It contains the line “I will get by I will survive” and I have always found that to be calming.?I do still like “Good mornin’ life” for morning meetings.?IT’S NOT a Christmas song.
