What's your Unfair Advantage?

Have you ever wondered what is your unfair advantage and how it can slay your game in any profession? Your unfair advantage can be a skill that is unique to you, which cannot be copied by others easily, and is contributing to keeping you above par, however, you could be shrugging it off just because it comes naturally to you and is regarded as common sense. Nonetheless, it is essential to be mindful of these excelling traits of yours for self-awareness and to utilize it further in scaling up your game. For example – you could be someone who can effortlessly bring teams together in difficult times to run the show and excels in boosting the morale of the team, you could be an Ace People Person or Leader. You might be great at managing data and researching, which your team struggles to get by. You could be that person whom everyone turns to for recommendations/advice on any specific areas of your profession.

Your unfair advantage might be the reason you are assigned a leadership role for an assignment and your unfair advantage could exemplify why you are the finest choice for the particular job. Whatever it is, do find it out, because this will get you to the next level in your career or achieve milestones. You will have to be a smart investor and seller of your skills to take your game to that next level. Therefore, finding it out (the sooner the better) is crucial, because unless you do not know what you are selling, how will you reap the profits of selling the product/services? The whole idea here is to nail down that skill or way of doing things or that knowledge about a specific product that sets you apart, to use it to your advantage. This is absolutely not about bragging or making others seem less relevant or inferior but only knowing and honing up your skills for your individuality and focusing on your strengths to build a remarkable career/profession for yourself.

Once you know your expertise, start to demonstrate your ability in this area when you're required to make proposals to your supervisor or customers. Offering and describing times you were successful and how you were able to make 'something happen', will help you gain great trust from people. Once you know your unfair advantage and own it, you can use it to meet your desired goals – small or big, not just by citing that goal, but by pointing out details of how you've already accomplished important things in the past using your born or learned skill which is rare to people. Your unfair advantage thus will help you construct confidence and credibility with people and stakeholders. Each one of us has that one, if not many unfair advantages. Let’s find that out and tap into the world of possibilities using it as a tool.
