Have you ever tasted something and thought, “Wow! So and so would love this! Then, you talk so and so into giving it a taste and they don’t respond in the way you had hoped. The ingredients and flavor just didn’t Wow them in the same way it did for you.?
Have you ever connected with a leadership concept and shared it with your team and it just didn’t have the same effect that it had on you??
Finding the right ingredients or flavor to help a team excel is a process of taste testing to discover the right flavor. And, it all has to do with the right ingredients!?

I had a great mechanic in Albuquerque, NM. He knew that I was a minister and had a certification with the John Maxwell Team. One afternoon, he called and said, “Boyd, are you busy right now? I need some help. My team sucks!” I met with him and did a few coaching sessions. Shortly after, we contracted to go through some growth material with his team in 10 sessions. They were good sessions, but I could sense a disconnect. The sessions ended and I followed up to check on him and his team. He asked if I could come back to his office and discuss things. On the way to his shop, I had an idea. I pulled into a Wal-Mart and picked up 6 pints of Ben & Jerry's ice cream and spoons to meet with his team. I asked him to gather his team (6 at the time) and give me an hour. The team assembled and I handed out the ice cream and said, “Guys, Chunky Monkey is my favorite. It has 3 ingredients that make it awesome, banana, walnuts and fudge chunks. My question is, what 3 ingredients do you think you need to make this team awesome”? After an hour of talking, sharing ideas and concerns, we had 3 ingredients. He put them on a banner and the team went to work. As of 2024, His team at Advanced Team Automotive won Albuquerque’s Journal reader’s choice award for the best auto repair shop. Awesome, way to go! It all came down to finding the right ingredients to create the best flavor that the whole team loved.?
What are the 3 (or, more if needed to create the right flavor) ingredients that will make your team great? It will be different for every team. I encourage you to start taste testing and discover the ingredients that will make your team great.?
