What's Your Target?
So often, we hear professionals talking about wanting to be successful. But what does that really mean? Does my version of success look the same as yours? And how will we know when we get there? Is success something we’re constantly striving for but never reach? Or is it a point we arrive at and then stop striving for more? If you’re an ambitious professional, these are essential questions.
First, how can you hit your target if you don’t know what you’re aiming for? This is why it’s so important for loan officers to get specific. What does success actually mean for you? When we don’t define our target not only does it make it more challenging to hit, but it sets us up to feel like we never do. This can be an exhausting feeling, that true success is always just out of reach. When you give yourself specific goals, clear numbers, realistic timeframes, and keep yourself accountable, you’ll know exactly where your target is and what you need to do to hit it.
So often, we talk about success like it’s one thing - one point to arrive at. But this idea can be incredibly limiting. Rather than seeing success as a fixed point, I like to see it as an evolution. It’s not something that’s always out of reach, but rather something I can continue achieving and redefining. By staying in that cycle, I know what I’m working towards, I get to feel the satisfaction and motivation from achieving it, and I use that to create a new target a bit further out. Rinse and repeat.
One other thing I think is so important for professionals to consider when it comes to success - you define it for you. It doesn’t matter what anyone else's definition of success is. Maybe there are LOs out there content with much less than you, or perhaps there are LOs who want to invest every second of the day in their business. There’s no right or wrong here. Don’t waste your valuable energy looking outwards to define success. When you create the definition for yourself and get into a process of achievement and redefining, you’ll be on track to excel.
Do you have a clear picture of success in your own business? Do you agree that that point will change over time? I’d love to hear what you think about this!
