What's Your Story?

What's Your Story?

You have a story. We all do. And that's what brings us together in commonality.

But it's also what makes you and everyone else very unique.

The people at Storied Gifts help us understand the good that comes from telling your story. Here are a few bullet points:

  • As the key person in your story, you do justice to who you are and who you can be
  • Replacing a negative story with one that allows for growth can boost performance and improve mental health
  • Through story we find we are similar to others and not alone (the link of shared experiences)
  • You are able to offer hope and healing to others. It’s akin to saying, "I’ve been through this experience and there may be insights to help someone else make it through, too."

But the most impactful benefits of documenting and telling your story is that you identify the ingredients you have accumulated throughout the 40 or 50 years you've lived on this earth.

Knowing those ingredients, you are in a position to work on the recipe that will define your fantastic 4th Quarter of life.

So here's your call to action:

  1. Grab a piece of paper (landscape) and pen.
  2. Draw a horizontal line across the middle of the page.
  3. Create hashmarks at every 5 years along the line. (you now have a line broken down by 5-year increments).
  4. Think back to each age segment to identify any positive and negative memories. For positive ones, draw a vertical line up from the timeline and give the memory a title. For negative ones, draw a vertical line down from the timeline and give the memory a title.
  5. Look over the list of memories. What trends or recurring themes do you see?
  6. Identify what you learned from each of the memories.

Your story is a powerful tool as you build a future plan. It's a starting point that arms you with insight that can be used to leverage. For example, I had a very positive experience being a bus boy at a local Dutch restaurant. As I reflect on that memory, I have identified a competency that I have been drawn to and have utilized my entire career: making order out of chaos.

I'd love to hear your story. I love to learn how people have navigated the ups and downs of life. If you'd like to connect and talk about your story,

Tom Garrity, Matthew Kulp, CFP?, CEPA? and Blake Brewer - Scott has joined the Business Builders... his work is for a different client than Tom's/Matt's - or rather can be. Scott works with a mix of people who want to live proactively and intentionally... those who want to create their best 4th quarter of life. He works with people of various vocations in their 40s/50s - could be business owners or leaders or solopreneurs or pastors or professionals or truck drivers or leaders of a shift at the factory. The diversity makes his group stronger and brings in more viewpoints. I'm looking forward to all of you meeting Scott on zoom or in person.
