Dear friends and supporters,

In a data-driven world, it can be easy to forget that behind every data point is a real person with a unique set of experiences and a powerful story to tell.

This month we’re dialing back the emphasis on our data-driven research to kick off a new video storytelling series we created with the support of Experian. (Don’t worry, we have more amazing data-rich content coming soon).

Earlier this year, our team headed to Atlanta and spent time with SaverLife members Janelle and Sherman, who opened up to us about who they are, the financial health challenges they’ve overcome, and the ways that SaverLife has been there for them along the way.

These are the stories that guide us as a member-first organization and the voices we prioritize in every facet of our work. I hope they inspire you in your work too, because I’m a firm believer that we all need a reminder from time to time of the people we’re serving and the future we’re fighting for.

We’re endlessly grateful for Janelle and Sherman’s enthusiasm to participate in this project and serve as active members in the SaverLife community. And while their financial health journeys are as unique and different as they are, there are obvious similarities that we’ve seen echoed across many of our other members’ stories.

Some common themes we’ve seen are that our members:

  • Have financial lives that are complex and interconnected. It’s impossible to focus on improving just one facet of someone’s financial life.
  • Know what they need and have ideas about the ways financial products, programs, and policies could better serve them. Their voices need to be heard, understood, and invited into decision-making conversations.
  • Are making progress on their financial health journeys, but there’s more progress to be made. There’s only so much one person can and should have to figure out on their own, and it’s up to us, as a field, to ensure our financial system works for, and not against, them.

I’ll end with this: our members’ stories have the power to “change the balance.” But they need an audience that’s willing to listen and a community that’s committed to advancing their priorities.

If you’re reading this message, we consider you part of our community and an ally in helping us amplify our members’ voices. Please join us and share these videos widely to help us achieve the financial health future our members deserve.

Cheers,
