What's Your Story - Leadership
Have you ever wanted something so badly you did everything you could to get it??Maybe it was promising the moon to your parents to get that Walkman (iPod for younger folks) or maybe it was given away your time for something.?Well, is that leadership or is that fitting into the cycle of wanting something?
Kevin McCarthy fell into that trap.?However, was that being a leader or was it just giving in.?As a leader we need to make different decisions, and we need people to follow.?“Reading the room” is a common phrase that is discussed on a regular basis.?Many leaders are not great readers of the room.?Some think they will just rise to the next level, rather than do the work. ?Some think if they do the work they should rise to the next level.
However, you have to do both, and you have to be able build a consensus in your leadership. You need people that will follow, but not follow blindly.?You need challengers at every level of leadership.?
In order to win at business, you need to win by consensus not by dictatorship.?However, consensus does not mean equal decision making, but it means making sure there are common grounds and ethos to discuss and work with.?This is about culture and developing that culture.
SO, you can’t expect to be a leader just by being a leader or being next in line, but you do the work, you need to build a consensus among those you are leading and working with, so they see your point of view, your thought process and move forward.
