What's Your Sleep Code?

Melatonin is the sleep hormone. It regulates the circadian rhythm, the body's natural time clock. ?????? It is also an important antioxidant, especially for the brain. And is so important for protecting neurons.
The interaction of our genes and our environment determines how good we are at making melatonin.
??If you aren’t sleeping well, or you know your melatonin levels are low, taking a Lifecode Gx DNA test can help work out why. ?????????
To support YOUR genes and optimise melatonin synthesis:
Eat a good amount of tryptophan foods - turkey and almonds, and folate foods - particularly if you have genetic variants on TPH or MTHFR genes
??Spend time outdoors in sunlight especially in the morning. Not only will this regulate your circadian rhythm but Vitamin D will help make serotonin which is a precursor to melatonin
?????Reduce stimulants such as caffeine and sugar and electronic devices. COMT or MAOB gene variants are associated with slower dopamine removal so if you have SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms) on these gene you might find it takes longer to wind down.
Get into a good sleep routine - especially if you have the CLOCK or PER1 gene variants associated with longer circadian rhythm and ‘night owl’ tendencies.
At Lifecode Gx we test for genes implicated in melatonin synthesis in our Nervous System report, and circadian rhythm genes in our Athlete and Sleep reports. DNA testing is supported by a qualified, experienced health professional.
