What's your role title?

There are so many various names used for digital roles that are pretty much the same thing. A good example is the people who create software. Are they Developers, Programmers, Software Engineers, Tech Leads, Coders, Solution Designers?

It's a problem when you are trying to quickly identify roles that are basically the same thing, and so we thought maybe we could come up a list of equivalent names.

We took typical Australian Public Service role names that digital practitioners in each discipline told us were the best titles for their roles. Then we scanned through several years worth of Commonwealth job advertisements, looking at the role titles given. Where the given role title seemed to be a match for one of our typical roles, we added it as an alternate role name.

We would love to get your feedback on any of the alternate roles names in this collection. Are there any that seem to be plain wrong, or have we missed any obvious examples?

There could be some bias in the way government agencies are titling roles, so we could have missed some names commonly used in the non-government sector. Please let us know if you notice any, so we can make our collection more representative.

We know that at the most granular level, no two jobs are exactly the same, and we are not trying to say all roles with these names are the same. It's more a case that if you were looking for a role of one type, what other names might help you find a very similar role?
