What's Your Recovery Playlist?
Thinking back over my recovery, self-discovery and healing, I am reminded of the music that let me hear, feel, and give voice to what I was going through. It was the poet Anne Sexton who reflected on the power of music to both remember and transcend. From inside a locked ward she wrote: "The music remembers more than I".
I would venture a guess that each of us has a playlist that has accompanied our recovery. Sure, we have added and deleted, discovered and outgrown a bunch of tunes. But some music stands the test of our journey and remains as true today as it was when we were in our toughest times. Here are my top three tunes and the single lines that kept me going:
Van Morrison - Astral Weeks
- Sweet Thing - Oh, it's me and I'm dynamite and I don't know why.
- Astral Weeks - I will never ever grow so old again.
Van Morrison - Saint Dominics Preview
- Listen to the Lion - Listen to the lion, inside of me
Do you have a recovery/self-discovery/healing playlist? What are your top three enduring tunes?
I'd love to hear from you.
