It's interesting how many people assume that, because I'm a CEO of an aged and disability care organisation, I am, or should be, a guru on aged and disability care. I'm apologetically not.
We have a lot of people in the organisation who are far more knowledgeable and much better at delivering aged and disability services than me. I've obviously learned a little about the industry in my time there - enough to avoid really dangerous decisions - but my primary role is to create an environment in which our staff can grow, develop and do their jobs to the best of their ability, and enjoy doing it. If I do that well, our staff can and will deliver exceptional services to our clients and the community.
That probably sounds simplistic, but it's the truth. Yes, I also need to help guide the strategic direction of the organisation and ensure we have the hard and soft structure and infrastructure to deliver our services well. But that's part of developing the right environment.
The majority of my time should be spent helping our people develop and grow as individuals. I don't need to be a guru in aged and disability services to do that.
So what's your real job? And are you doing it?

7 年Job titles are an interesting conundrum. Many people say they don't care what their job title is, but I think we all make judgments around that, not least, as you say, recruitment agencies. And it can be hard to create a job title that adequately explains what you do and that's not "War and Peace"!

7 年I can empathize with this somewhat. Some recruitment consultants are guilty of pigeon-holing people based on the preconceived notions of the job title-job function connection. If a person does not have the word 'risk' in their job title, it does not necessarily mean that they do not perform that function.
