I remember one I had. I wanted to produce a balance sheet style reporting at any level of date granularity. But, when you aggregate in Tableau, it adds all those values rather than just the last value. Tut.
That was when I first came across LOD’s back in 2015 - I remember it well as the brilliant Bethany Lyons called me out at the conference she was introducing them to, when she was a Product Manager at Tableau.
I’d been chatting to her in the weeks beforehand discussing my “balance sheet” use case. She had struggled to solve it simply for me, before their release.
Star struck and blinded by these new capabilities I lapped them up.
But then my learning faltered. I was looking for reasons to use them.
I fell into a trap I had seen so many others fall into. I was trying to learn something for the sake of learning…
