What’s on your HR Agenda for 2017?

Now that we are all back from the festive season and have survived the school holidays, this is the week we kick-off the activities and hard work for 2017.

So what will this mean for HR?

Recently there has been a lot of discussion and papers about the future of HR, and the world of work, a few sources being:

PWC Report - The Future of Work

Corporate Research Forum – HR Manifesto Jan 2017

There is a lot of discussion about the survival of the HR profession in the future, however this quote summed it up:

“We disagree with commentators who argue that there will be no role for HR 10 years from now. With the right responses it will be enhanced. To achieve this, HR needs better people, much better development and a more systematic way of looking at organisations.”

This certainly resonates with us here at The Next Step, and many HR leaders that we have met within the last 6 months.

One of the key challenges facing HR is about the upskilling of its own profession, keeping up with the commercial pace, and the level of business acumen that is undoubtedly needed to understand, challenge and support business transformation into future state.

Whilst we all know this, it is still an eye opener to us how little is spent on assessing and developing these skills in the wider HR team. Perhaps 2017 is the year when we, as a profession, start investing in ourselves, to help future proof our industry.

If you would like to meet and discuss this or to how our HR Assessment and Development business The HR Space, can help you achieve this, please reach out.

Great article Michael. I agree however, I think internal HR functions will diminish in size and volume work and low level 'noise' etc will be managed more and more by line managers or an outsourced and digital HR provider / tech platform. Meanwhile HR must become more commercially astute and continue to develop in all areas of more strategic service.
